If you’ve ever had a concept that would make condoms better, now’s the time. Bill Gates will give you $100,000.
That’s because the billionaire wants to improve the sex life, and the sexual health, of everyone on the planet. Through his nonprofit, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, he’s calling on scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs and crafty types alike to develop the next generation of condoms.
Prophylactics haven’t changed all that much in the last 50 years, but Gates believes that someone could use half a century’s worth of technological advances, or simple ingenuity, to change safe sex practices for the next 50 years and beyond.
This challenge is part of a series by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve global health and well-being. Prophylactics that perform better — easier to use, more natural in feel — are more likely to be used regularly. And when used during every sexual encounter, sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS, are likely to decrease.
Any concept that enhances the pleasure of using prophylactics has the potential to be selected for further development. If your design is deemed a game-changer, Bill Gates is ready to spend $1,000,000 to prototype and test it quickly. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has also set up channels to manufacture, market and distribute these next generation condoms.
Other challenges in the series include improving the delivery of vaccines, improving nutrition and curing infection.
Developing any of those is certainly admirable, but creating a super-great feeling condom, now that’s sexy.
