Currently, Durex accounts for approximately 29% of the global branded condom market. The company sells condoms in over 130 countries worldwide and is the market leader in more than 40 markets. That’s the perfect base for the company’s yearly surveys.

There’s another one just coming up at the UK’s National Condom Week of 18 – 24 May 2009 and Durex is hoping to address the biggest possible number of people through a newly set up Facebook group:

“Durex is kicking off National Condom Week (18 – 24 May 2009) by launching what it hopes will be the biggest ever insight into the sexual habits and practices of the nation. Please go to one of the websites below to take part and stand the chance of winning great prizes. And invite as many people as possible to join this group. Findings will be published with a national news partner later this year.“

If you want to be part of this join the the British Sex Survey or the facebook group. Goody bags were up for grabs for the ones who invited their friends, but they are all gone by now.

Perhaps it would be best to call this an anti-viral, if only for the disease stopping potential. The new film for Durex, synonymous with the word condom in the UK, takes a decidedly comedic twist (um…position?) on encouraging the use of its products in the US. To create the animated frolic, agency, Fitzgerald+CO turned to the talent of Superfad who eagerly embraced the opportunity.

The Short Story Behind

The ad is originally based on a shoot by photographer Arian Camilleri, whose excellent characters were ported into the durex short above (which were probably inspired by the earlier Durex Play) ads.

The ad features various women using the lubricant Durex Play O (no you don’t see that) and are accompanied by an opera singer.

Durex Play O is a pleasure enhancing gel for women that is working for many women out there. It’s nicely packaged and looks like a perfume. To launch such a fashionable product Durex installed a temporary store in Milan during (and before) the fashion week in September, which I thought was quite a good idea.

Now what is it with the title of this article. I really think the Durex Play O ad is done well, but I wouldn’t call it original. For a little comparison there’s the Passion Powered by Control and the Manix Take over the World ads below that also use similar effects (as many other do also I’m sure). The most interesting thing about the Control ad is, that it looks like it is inspired by a Scorsese short movie (Key to Reserva). To watch the videos just click on them.

Durex U is a new controversial campaign by Durex Condoms USA. Durex U (University) is a national US campaign geared towards university students and lets you win a 25’000 Dollar scholarship.

All you have to do to enter is filling out their application form until the 15th of December 2008 (at 11:59pm). It is true that there isn’t much more to this campaign than the university approach. You will not find any particularly helpful information about condom usage and condoms in general. But I’m sure there are enough places out there helping you with that (condomunity?).

Instead you can visit two short classes by Cindee and Chazz. They’ll explain in short illustration how you could end up using one of Durex’ products. Naturally the products can be bought right off their store.

Burnley FC and The Condom Collective are handing out club branded condoms at their home matches as part of a sexual health campaign. And if there was any doubt about the reception of this campaign and the general idea of club branded condoms: the Burnley FC fans thankfully picked up all of the 3000 Durex condoms handed out by sexual health workers this weekend.

This is certainly a good idea and it’s hard to believe that this was nationally seen the first time ever a football club handed out self-branded condoms considering the fact that the target group is attending the games (16-24 year olds). Let’s just hope that they’re actually going to be used and don’t end up in a display along with the other Burnley FC merchandise.

Who still doubts that football has anything to do with condoms, please have a look at what Capetown players do with them.

This Durex store is the first of its kind worldwide and goes by the slogan “better sex, all you need for a better life”, as Durex Italy says. The main focus is put on design and the new Durex product launch Play “O” (as you can see in the main window and on the cushion below). The ominous “O” is a brandnew stimulating gel designed for use with condoms. It comes in a small, well designed and perfume like package and bottle and will be advertised in an integrated campaign in October.

If you’d like to see some of this you should hurry up because the store closes again in October to make way for a new concept. The Durex store and their staff however will host one more happy hour on Thursday night at 19:00 (Corso Garibaldi 59/A, Milano). For everyone else it means, have a look at the pictures and wait for the Durex Not So Temporary store near you (and I’m pretty sure Durex will have a closer look at the store concept when the first Milan shop closes its doors).
